David Martin broke down in tears on Saturday afternoon after helping West Ham seal a first win at Chelsea in 17 years on his Premier League debut.

And talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham also choked up live on air as he witnessed the events first hand at Stamford Bridge, alongside Martin’s West Ham legend father, Alvin, and Ian Abrahams.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper fell to the ground at the final whistle, with his team-mates rushing over to pick him after their shock 1-0 win in west London.

The boyhood Hammer, who joined the club from London rivals Millwall back in June, was named in Manuel Pellegrini’s starting XI after the under-fire Roberto was dropped following a poor run of form.

talkSPORT regular Alvin Martin was in the crowd to watch his son make his top-flight bow, with the pair embracing for a special moment in the stands after the game.

And Matchday Live host Durham simply couldn’t talk as he watched the events unfold live on air, saying it was one of the most emotional scenes he had witnessed in his broadcasting career.

Reacting to the historic win, Martin said: “It still doesn’t feel real. I’m just pleased I got through it, I didn’t let anyone down and actually I enjoyed it in the end.

“My dad didn’t say much – I think we were both in tears! For my dad to play for the club for 21 years and see it, and for me to make my debut, keep a clean sheet and get win for the boys, it is so pleasing.”

On his pre-match nerves, Martin added: “I was struggling to eat for two days, Cressa [Ryan Cresswell] was laughing at me because my plate was taken away because I couldn’t eat my food.”

The result will relieve the pressure on Pellegrini, who has come under increased scrutiny after a seven-game winless streak saw them hovering above the bottom three in 17th prior to this weekend’s fixtures.

Aaron Cresswell was West Ham’s match-winner as he cut inside to fire a powerful effort low into the bottom corner past Kepa Arrizabalaga three minutes after the break, with Frank Lampard’s men unable to recover.
