We’ve previously seen Qualcomm launch the gaming-focused Snapdragon 730G, while also pushing the brand-new Snapdragon 855 Plus as a gaming chipset. It now looks like MediaTek is joining the party with a gaming-branded offering of its own.
According to CNBeta and DroidShout, a MediaTek G90 poster was shared online by various Chinese media portals today. Furthermore, the poster shows that the company is holding a launch event in Shanghai on July 30 to introduce the new processor.
We don’t know any more details regarding this new chipset, but the name suggests it could be related to the previously announced Helio P90. That processor offers an octa-core CPU (two Cortex-A75 and six Cortex-A55 cores), an Imagination Technologies‘ IMG 9XM-HP8 GPU, an AI Accelerator, and an APU.
MediaTek will need to work on the GPU side of things if it hopes to deliver a proper gaming chipset though. Right now, Qualcomm‘s Adreno GPUs are considered the best pick for mobile graphics, ahead of Arm and Imagination Technologies. Nevertheless, the Taiwanese chip designer could still potentially offer competitive graphical performance by opting for Arm’s new Mali-G77 or Imagination’s latest Furian-based mobile GPUs.
MediaTek’s chipsets are also traditionally cheaper than Qualcomm’s processors, so don’t be surprised if it aims for the budget sector with the Helio G90. We’ve contacted the firm for more information regarding this purported chipset and will update the article accordingly.
