Jermain Defoe said there was no comparison between the Rangers and Bournemouth jobs following Jamie O’Hara’s comments on talkSPORT.

The former Tottenham midfielder claimed Steven Gerrard should take the newly vacant role at the now Championship Cherries as it is the ‘bigger job’.

The expected backlash followed with talkSPORT’s Ally McCoist saying there were only three Premier League clubs bigger than Rangers.

Celtic fan Sir Rod Stewart even phoned in to Drive to defend their bitter rivals.

Defoe knows a thing or two about both clubs. The striker had one full season with the south coast team before joining Rangers on loan and then went on to make a permanent move to the 54-time Scottish champions.

Defoe told talkSPORT: “I actually know Jamie O’Hara. He’s that sort of character. He’s not shy.

“To be totally honest, when I saw it I laughed. Someone showed it to me and I couldn’t believe it. I was thinking ‘Jamie, why would you say that?’

“I listened to Ally McCoist and what he said was quite funny. I hope after he probably realised what he said.

“For me it’s a difficult one as obviously I played for Bournemouth but let’s be honest everyone will say that. There’s no comparison with the size of this football club. It’s massive and an unbelievable fanbase.

“What he said was laughable.”
