CM Punk ‘absolutely loved’ WWE’s new MMA-style idea RAW Underground

It’s fair to say WWE’s newest creation, Raw Underground, divided opinion this week.

Shane McMahon introduced a new segment to RAW where it seems wrestlers will fight in a dark part of the Performance Center in MMA-style bouts.

It featured a dark studio, a ring with no ropes, women dancing and a lot of quick, MMA-infused finishes.

Many wrestling fans pondered the point of having something like this when you already have the UFC and other MMA promotions if that’s your bag – the incentive to see that done in a scripted fashion is questionable at best.

However, it seems there was an air of intrigue on the heels of Shane’s announcement and the ratings improved from the previous week.

Although this is being presented by Shane McMahon, this is legitimately his idea behind the scenes too and WWE legend CM Punk is a big fan.

During a SummerSlam 1992 watch party with Renee Young and Booker T, Punk said he thought the idea was ‘really cool’.

“I absolutely loved it,” he said. “I want to see Nia Jax in there. They should get more women in there. Let us see some bodies getting broken.

“The idea that Shane McMahon and all these people would be in the Performance Center for the whole three hours and they cut into what they’re doing in various segments is pretty cool. Three hours of no holds barred fights and strippers, that’s all I want to see.”

Booker T actually thought it might be the perfect concept to tempt Punk back to WWE.

“As soon as I saw the preview – a shoot-fighting concept and all, bringing the noise – the first person I thought of was CM Punk,” he added. “I know the money has to be right, but maybe this thing will lure Punk back to WWE.”

While Punk wouldn’t be drawn to make a serious answer, he did jokingly reference his 0-2 record in the UFC.

“You want me to get that first MMA win, right?”
