1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Cast of the Monty pyton and the holy Grail

After gathering a cult following for their work on the BBC comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus and a movie based on it, this group of sketch comedians blew audiences away with their first original film. 1975’s Monty Python and the Holy Grail remains one of funniest movies ever made. If you have never watched it, prepare to start quoting a ton of its lines. This may be the best movie ever made about the myth of King Arthur as well, and that’s saying something.

You can also catch up on the group’s earlier work on Netflix, which is streaming the entire run of the Monty Python’s Flying Circus TV series. Also make sure to watch another great film, Monty Python’s Life of Brian.

2. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

To all the boys ive loved before Netflix funny movies

Netflix has recently hit it big with original young adult romantic comedy movies, which have turned its actors into major social media hits. Perhaps the best movie in this genre on Netflix is To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Based on the best selling book of the same name, it was released on Netflix in 2018. It tells the story of a teenage girl and her letters to all of her past secret crushes, but she’s only written these notes for herself. However, these letters get out into the wild, and she has to deal with the fallout.

The movie may have a cute premise, but it’s made more relatable thanks in part to the performances of Lana Condor, who plays the letter-writing girl Lara Jean, along with breakout teenage male heartthrob star Noah Centineo, who plays one of her crushes. The movie is already set for a sequel on Netflix, set for release in 2020.

3. Thor: Ragnarok

Screencap of the main character in Thor: Ragnarok

The Marvel Cinematic Universe films have always had a healthy dose of comedy, but none of them are funnier than Thor’s third outing directed by Taika Waititi. Thor, as played by Chris Hemsworth, has to deal with his newly discovered sister Hela, who wants to destroy Asgard and everyone in it. He also has to escape from a planet where gladiatorial contests are held between aliens, and one of them happens to be the Hulk. This makes the film a bit of a buddy comedy, and Tom Hiddleston, of course, returns with all of his great one-liners as Thor’s trickster brother Loki. Then there’s Jeff Goldblum, who hams it up (in a good way) in his performance as the Grandmaster. Thor: Ragnarok is simply a good time all around, and a nice reprieve before we get serious again for Avengers: Infinity War (also on Netflix).

4. The Hangover

the hangover netflix

We have all wondered what a night in Las Vegas would really be like if we just threw caution to the wind and partied like there was no tomorrow. The 2009 comedy The Hangover gives us a vision of what the aftermath might be like. Three friends head to Vegas for a massive bachelor party for another soon-to-be-groom. Then, we jump ahead several hours to find all sorts of things that are just plain wrong. The humor comes from not the actual party itself, but the three friends discovering what they don’t remember doing after that party. This film spawned two sequels, neither of which were close to being as fun as the original, but The Hangover is still one of the funniest movies on Netflix.

5. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

The main characters of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Based on the Scott Pilgrim comic book series, this 2010 movie adaptation from Hot Fuzz writer-director Edgar Wright was a major box office bomb when it was released in theaters. Since then, the movie has garnered a cult following that gets its mix of young adult romance and video game action. Michael Cera plays the title role of Scott Pilgrim, a bassist who falls for the pink-haired Ramona Flowers, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. One problem for Pilgrim: in order to keep dating Flowers, he must battle and defeat all seven of her ex-boyfriends. All of these confrontations are inspired by retro video games, and Wright’s use of gaming graphics and icons in Pilgrim’s fights with the exes is one of the coolest, and funniest, things you will likely see in movies in a long time.

6. Four Weddings and a Funeral

four weddings and a funeral netflix 1

If you like comedies with a bit of tragedy mixed in, then Four Weddings and a Funeral is for you. This 1994 film was the one that turned Hugh Grant into a major movie star. It also cemented his film character persona as a somewhat likeable person who never wants to commit to anything, especially to a relationship. The film itself, as the title suggests, takes place during four weddings and a funeral in Britain, as Grant’s character Charles keeps encountering Andie MacDowell’s Carrie. The movie shows the two encountering each other at these events, but circumstances seem to keep them from getting together. While the ending is a bit predictable and saccharine, it’s the journey to that end that makes Four Weddings and a Funeral stand out.

7. Groundhog Day

groundhog day netflix

Groundhog Day is not only one of the funniest movies on Netflix, but also one of the most influential and parodied films of the past 25 years. The 1993 movie stars Bill Murray as a TV weatherman who gets assigned to cover the annual Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. After he covers the event, he finds himself repeating that day’s events over, and over, and over. The movie comes up with a lot of clever and funny things Murray’s character can do when he realizes that he’s stuck in this time loop, but how does he get out of it, and does he really want this to end? Groundhog Day is not the first movie to use this idea of repeating the same time period constantly, but it did popularize the premise, and since then we have seen it use in a number of movies and TV shows, including in the recent Netflix TV series Russian Doll.

8. Caddyshack

caddyshack netflix

One of the funniest movies on Netflix also happens to be one of the best, if not the best, golf-themed movies of all time. It was not successful at the box office when it was first released in 1980, but Caddyshack has turned into a massive cult film in the decades since it was made. The film covers several different characters who are all hitting the links at the Bushwood Country Club, including the smooth-talking and playing Ty Webb (Chevy Chase), the snooty co-founder of the club, Judge Smails (Ted Knight), a young caddy, Danny Noonan who wants to get the club’s caddy college scholarship (Michael O’Keefe), and a new club member, the crass but still loveable Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield). However, all of these funny folks are outplayed by Bill Murray’s Carl Spackler, the assistant groundskeeper who’s only major goal in life is to take out a gopher who is tearing up the golf course.

If you have never seen Caddyshack, you need to stream it on Netflix ASAP. It is a truly classic funny movie that never gets old.

9. Heathers

10 best funny movies on Netflix you can stream right now! 2

If you like your comedies with a very dark edge, then Heathers is definitely one for you. The 1989 cult favorite stars Winona Ryder as a teenager who joins the “Heathers,” a group of extremely cruel girls who believe they rule their local high school. Ryder’s character gets tired of the Heathers and how they treat everyone else at the school, and wants out of the group. Enter Christian Slater’s character who gets together with Ryder in a plot to take down the Heathers, and that leads into some funny, but also very dark, areas. It’s not for everyone, but this movie became a huge hit not only because it’s hilarious, but also because it has some messages on teens and their quest to be popular.

10. The 40-Year-Old Virgin

40 year old virgin Netflix funny movies

Our last movie on our best funny movies on Netflix list is the one that turned The Daily Show correspondent and The Office TV actor Steve Carell into a movie star. This 2005 comedy was co-written and directed by comedy maestro Judd Apatow in his film directorial debut. The 40-Year-Old Virgin has Carell (the movie’s other co-writer) as the title character, a man who works in an electronics store and collects action figures, but who has never had a real relationship with a woman. Carell is both funny and sympathetic at the same time, as his friends and co-workers try to solve his “problem.”

Best funny movies on Netflix – Honorable mentions

There are tons of great comedy films currently streaming on Netflix that just missed the cut. Here’s a look at just some of these still funny movies on Netflix:

  • Always Be My Maybe — This recent Netflix original romantic comedy is co-written by its stars, Ali Wong and Randall Park, as they play friends since childhood who are trying to become more than friends in adulthood.
  • Take Me Home Tonight— Here’s another great classic comedy about teenage life, and also the need for some teens to grow up.
  • Gremlins — You think this is going to be a cute comedy fantasy movie about a cute little furry creature, but it soon turns into a very violent, but still funny, movie about rampaging little monsters.

These are our picks for the best funny movies on Netflix, as of right now. We’ll add more as new comedies come and go on the streaming service.
